What is optical prism?

 An optical prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract light. At least one surface must be angled-elements with two parallel surfaces are not prisms. The traditional geometrical shape of an optical prism is that of a triangular prism with a triangular base and rectangular sides, and in colloquial use "prism" usually refers to this type. Some types of optical prism are not in fact in the shape of geometric prisms. Prisms can be made from any material that is transparent to the wavelengths for which they are designed. Typical materials include glass, plastic, and fluorite.

HOW DOES THE PERISCOPE PRISM WORK?
 
  A periscope is an optical instrument that uses a system of prisms, lenses or mirrors to reflect images through a tube. Light from a distant object strikes the top mirror and is then reflected at an angle of 90 degrees down the periscope tube. At the bottom of the periscope, the light strikes another mirror and is then reflected into the viewer's eye. This simple periscope uses only flat mirrors as compared to the periscopes used on submarines, which are usually a complex optical system using both lenses and mirrors.
 

WHY IS PRISM A BETTER MATERIAL TO MAKE A PERISCOPE THAN A PLANE MIRROR?
  Prisms make use of "total internal reflection" (TIR), an advantage over the losses you'd expect from mirrors. Mirrors only reflect about 95% of that reflected by prisms using appropriate TIR angles. Prisms also avoid the refraction distortion that can result when using a glass fronted, reflective coated mirror.

  Oplens equipped Zygos which work by producing a beam of laser light and transmitting it to the optic under test by way of a very, very accurate lens fitted to the Zygo. This is the key to the instrument's accuracy. As the light passes through this lens, which is not coated, it enables 4% of the light to be reflected back into the Zygo.
