Aspheric Lenses are designed to focus light while eliminating spherical aberration from divergent light sources in applications including focusing the output of a laser diode. Aspheric lenses can increase the numerical aperture of a lens while minimizing system aberrations. Aspheric lenses may also reduce the number of elements needed in a multi-element system. Aspheric lenses can reduce overall system weight while providing advantages such as increasing throughput or simplifying assembly.

The surface profiles of aspheric lenses are not a portion of a sphere or cylinder. Their curvature radius varies with the central axis. Aspheric lenses have unique advantages over spherical lenses. For example, they can improve optical quality, reduce optical components and design costs. They are widely used in optical instruments, images and optoelectronics industries, such as digital cameras, CD players and high-end microscopic instruments.

Processing

Oplens equipped Precitech SPDT with Taylor Hobson PGI 3D profilometer. The results of the profilometer measurement system can be directly put into the diamond machine to provide positive compensation values for the machining of aspheric components. At the same time, curvature, surface flatness, roughness and other indicators can be quantified effectively and accurately.
Oplens equipped Zygos which work by producing a beam of laser light and transmitting it to the optic under test by way of a very, very accurate lens fitted to the Zygo. This is the key to the instrument's accuracy. As the light passes through this lens, which is not coated, it enables 4% of the light to be reflected back into the Zygo.
